Editing Structures and Reactions
Edit chemistry text or draw atoms, bonds, rings, and reactions, then apply the result.
Edit source text
Choose Edit Structure Source or Edit Reaction Source in the document toolbar. Paste supported chemistry text, or use Enter an IUPAC name to convert a supported name. Apply & Render updates the document; Cancel discards the staged edit.
Draw with the chemical editor
Choose Draw Structure or Draw Reaction. Select an atom or bond tool, tap or drag on the canvas, and use rings or templates for common fragments. Selection, erase, undo, redo, zoom, and cleanup help refine the drawing.
Add Structure is available in new and existing drawings and in the query editor. Choose a structure from the Molecule Browser, select a structure file, or enter a chemical name or structure text. Tap the canvas to place the addition alongside the existing drawing. Undo removes the addition; cancelling leaves the drawing unchanged. Whole reactions retain their roles and layout, but cannot be used as molecule-search queries.
Select an atom or bond to adjust properties such as element, charge, isotope, bond order, or stereochemistry. Check validation feedback before applying. Reaction arrows, plus signs, and participant roles describe a reaction.
- Apply the edited structure or reaction to return to the document, then use Save to keep a managed copy. Cancelling the drawing editor leaves the document unchanged.
- In Managed Repository, Search by Query Structure opens the editor for a search instead. Choose Substructure or Similarity and Search; a search does not save the query as a repository item.
- For a new drawing on Mac, File > New opens the Chemical Drawing Editor. On iPad, choose New > Draw Structure in Library or Add > Draw New Structure in a document. Cancel discards the draft; Use Structure opens it as another document.
